July 14: Glass Insulators - Glass Insulators, a popular sideline to bottle collecting are sometimes called the glass jewels of the wire. Insulators were made in many different colors including aqua, green, clear, yellow and amethyst and many were embossed with company names and dates. Insulators for telegraph wires date back to the 1840's and some of the first were made at the Mt Pleasant Glass Works near Saratoga Springs, NY. Also, for those who study local history, know that the invention of the telegraph has a strong connection to Utica. This will be an interesting program, don't miss it. |
