Last months’ question - A Rome citizen in an 1865 newspaper advertisement claimed he was cured of consumption by an English physician.  Because of this he obtained the recipe for the medicine and manufactured and sold the elixir from his home at 72 James Street.  He claimed it would cure “consumption, bronchitis, catarrh and other diseases of the lungs”.  What was the persons name and the name of his medicine?

Answer: Rev. W. Harrison who made Rev. Harrison’s Pulmonic Mixture.  At right is an 1865 advertisement from The Roman Citizen an early Rome, N.Y. newspaper.  Below this ad was listed several testimonials from people who had used Rev. Harrison’s medicine and claimed to have been cured.

This is a scarce early Rome bottle, just missing the era of having a pontil scar.  The paneled aqua medicine is 10 inches tall, 3 ½ inches wide and 2 ½ inches deep and is embossed REV HARRISON/ROME, N.Y. on the front and PULMONIC on the left side and MIXTURE on the right.  This scarce bottle also is known in a smaller size.
